Kids don't always have the words.

When something hard is happening for a young child, asking them to sit and talk about it the way an adult would is asking a lot. They might not have the vocabulary yet. They might not be sure what they feel. They might not feel safe putting it into words.

Play therapy meets them where they actually are. Through play, drawing, storytelling, and the use of toys and materials they choose, children process what they're going through in the language they already speak. It's developmentally appropriate, evidence-based, and it works. For tweens and teens who are ready for conversation-based work, our child and teen therapy page describes that approach.

What It Actually Is

Play therapy isn't just kids playing.

Play therapy is a clinical approach with decades of research behind it. A trained play therapist creates a safe, structured space where a child can explore difficult experiences, emotions, and relationships through play, the natural way kids make sense of their world.

What looks like a child choosing a toy, drawing a picture, or telling a story is also a child working through anxiety, processing a loss, learning to regulate big feelings, or making sense of something that happened. The therapist isn't just playing along; she's guiding, observing, and helping the child build skills and find resolution.

Amanda Case, LPC, RPT

Licensed Professional Counselor · Registered Play Therapist

Amanda is one of a small number of clinicians in Oklahoma with a Registered Play Therapist credential. The RPT is awarded by the Association for Play Therapy and requires graduate-level training in play therapy theory and methods, supervised clinical hours specifically in play therapy, and ongoing continuing education in the field.

Her style is warm, patient, and down-to-earth. She has a particular passion for kids who don't fit the standard mold, including children navigating disability, chronic conditions, and life experiences that don't have an easy script.

1
Book the Intake
Pick a time online and book with Amanda. You'll receive a confirmation right away with intake forms to complete before the first session.
2
Parent Consultation
Your first appointment is usually a parent-only session so Amanda can hear the full picture of what's going on and walk you through how virtual play therapy will work for your child.
3
Sessions Begin
From there, sessions are with your child, with regular parent check-ins so you stay informed about themes, progress, and what helps at home.
A Note for Parents

How virtual play therapy actually works.

Virtual play therapy uses the toys, art supplies, and materials your child already has at home, guided by Amanda through the video session. Before your child's first appointment, Amanda will share a simple list of common items to have on hand (think crayons, paper, a few small toys), and she works with whatever your child has.

Your child will need a quiet, private space and a tablet or laptop for the session. Many kids settle into virtual play therapy faster than parents expect; the camera fades into the background quickly when they have something in their hands.

Parent Questions

What age range is play therapy for?
Play therapy is the right fit for younger children, generally ages 6 to 11, and for older kids who respond better to play-based work than to conversation. For tweens and teens ages 12 and up who can engage in talk-based therapy, our child and teen therapy page describes that approach. If you're not sure which is the right fit for your child, call (405) 370-4594 and we'll help you decide.
What is a Registered Play Therapist (RPT)?
The RPT is a credential awarded by the Association for Play Therapy. It requires graduate-level training in play therapy theory and methods, a set number of supervised clinical hours specifically in play therapy, and ongoing continuing education in the field. It's the credential that signals a clinician has specialized, focused training in this approach beyond their general license.
How does play therapy work over video?
Virtual play therapy uses the materials your child has at home, guided by Amanda through the video session. Before the first appointment, she'll share a simple list of common items to have ready (crayons, paper, a few favorite toys). Many kids settle in faster than parents expect once they have something in their hands.
How long does play therapy take?
It depends on what's going on for your child. Some children come in for a focused round of work and finish in a few months. Others stay longer, especially when there's been trauma or ongoing change. Amanda will revisit goals with you regularly so it's never a mystery.
Will I know what my child does in session?
You'll receive regular updates on themes, progress, and what helps at home, without the play-by-play. Your child needs to feel safe expressing themselves freely for the work to help them. The one exception is safety: if there's a concern about your child's safety or anyone else's, you will be informed.
Do you bill insurance for play therapy?
Yes. We are in-network with most major plans, including BlueCross BlueShield, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, TRICARE, Cigna, Optum, HealthChoice, and Healthcare Highways. We also accept Lyra for families with that EAP benefit. Your cost depends on your specific plan's copay, coinsurance, and deductible. Plan availability can vary by clinician, so call (405) 370-4594 to verify your child's coverage before the first session.
What if play therapy isn't the right fit for my child?
Amanda will tell you. If your child needs a different approach, a higher level of care, or a clinician with different specialization, she'll help you find the right next step. The goal is your child getting what they actually need.

Have a different question? Call (405) 370-4594 and we'll talk it through before you book.
